Like its competitors Plasma TV and LCD televisions, LED HDTV has also found customers for itself and has already made a place in the television market.

LED stands for Light Emitting diode. An LED HDTV is an improvement over the normal LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) televisions. An LED HDTV is actually an LED backlit LCD TV. The basic structuring of such a television is almost similar to the LCD television with the only difference being that the LED screen is backlit by an LED light source. LCD screens have been reported to have a problem of low contrast but LED screens are definitely an improvement over the LCD screens that are lit by fluorescent light bulbs.

Working of an LED HDTV (High Definition Television)

The functioning of an LED HDTV is more or less similar to the functioning of an LCD television set. There is a significant difference in the lighting source for both of these televisions. An LED backlit television falls in the class of rear projection televisions where a light source situated at the back of the screen lights up the screen.

The first point to remember is that an LED television screen is not similar to a normal LED display. Very large number of LED modules make up a LED screen. The television screen is divided into a number of small cells, each having to display a pixel or unit of the screen. This cell is again subdivided into three sub cells that reflect red, blue and green colors. A cell uses a combination of these three colors to make a color on the pixel.

This working principle is similar to the working of an LCD television. The article ' Difference between LCD televisions and Plasma television ' reflects the working of an LCD TV.

Differences Between an LED HDTV and a CCFL LCD TV

CCFL stands for Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps. These lamps or small light emitters are used to light up the screen of the old LCD television sets. LED HDTVs are an improvement over this technology. There are several factors that make LED HDTVs better than CCFL LCD TVs.

The first important factor is the quality of the pictures that are displayed. The drawback of CCFL TVs was that they were unable to produce dark images. They lacked in color quality. This is mostly because, to produce a dark image, the LCD crystals have to twist. This results in loss of image detail by lowering the contrast. LED HDTVs do not need to do this. They create dark images by simply dimming the backlight behind the cells responsible to create the image.

The power needed to run an LED HDTV is relatively lesser than that needed to run a CCFL LCD TV when one keeps in mind the better contrast ratio and color quality that it provides.

Another important factor is the size of the television. LED bulbs are smaller in size and consume lesser space. Also, the LED HDTVs have an advantage over LCD TVs in the area of viewing angle. LED screens match the viewing angle of plasma TVs and are far better than CCFL LCD televisions.

Reasons to Buy an LED HDTV

There are many reasons why one would prefer an LED HDTV over a CCFL LCD TV. They are power efficient and consume less space. Better image quality and contrast ratio have already been discussed. The viewing angle is again better than normal LCD TV. Also, CCFL contains mercury which is absent in LED TVs and hence LED HDTVs rank higher in being environment friendly.

Also, fluorescent lighting systems have been reported to get deteriorated over a period of time. LED lamps have a longer lifespan and are efficient in quality.

LED HDTV Market Share

LED HDTVs are an improvement over the traditional LCD televisions and the advantages provided by the LED TV place it much ahead in the minds of customers. The only bothering point is the price of the LED backlit TVs. They are priced higher than CCFL LCDs. This is one factor that bothers the LED TV market. But, if one has the money and the passion to see better picture quality, LED TV is the choice.
